Mumbai: In a tragic incident ahead of the upcoming Ganeshotsav festival celebrations, a 22-foot-tall Lord Ganesha idol collapsed onto a gathering of devotees during an arrival (Aagman) procession in South Mumbai's Bhuleshwar area on Saturday night. The catastrophe resulted in the death of two individuals, including the president of the Ganesh mandal, and left five others injured, among them two young children. Sequence of Events at Bhuleshwar

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Mumbai Police, the incident took place around 9:50 PM near Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk on Balaram Merchant Road. The 22-foot, approximately 3,000-kg idol of the 'Bhuleshwaracha Raja Ganesh Mandal' was being transported on a custom-built trolley platform from Byculla to its designated pandal in Bhuleshwar when the tragedy struck.

As hundreds of devotees accompanied the procession with festive celebrations, the structure suddenly lost balance and crashed forward into the accompanying crowd. Emergency response teams, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police from VP Road Police Station, and civic ward staff, were immediately mobilized to carry out rescue operations.

Casualties and Medical Response

The two deceased have been identified as 33-year-old Sanket Nevshe, the president of the Bhuleshwaracha Raja Mandal, and 30-year-old Brijesh Hemant Joshi, a resident of a nearby building who was trapped under the debris. Both were rushed to nearby medical facilities—including G.T. Hospital and Reliance Hospital—where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

The five injured victims have been identified as Vaibhav Ghenand (38), Pawan Chaurasia (25), Lavanya Ganer (5), Divya Ganer (7), and Kunal Kashid (26). Civic health authorities confirmed that the injured are receiving treatment at J.J. Hospital and G.T. Hospital, with their conditions reported to be stable.

Preliminary Investigation Points to Welding Failure

Initial technical assessments conducted by the police and civic engineers suggest that the idol's rear structural steel frame gave way. An official stated that the welding supporting the steel armature snapped while traversing uneven road patches, leading to the sudden forward collapse of the massive idol.

The VP Road Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and initiated an investigation into whether safety guidelines regarding structural anchoring and transport load balance were adhered to. Following the collapse, police and civic officials arranged for the shattered remnants of the idol to be immersed in the Arabian Sea off Girgaon Chowpatty in accordance with protocol.
